APPLETON Cricket Club were frustrated by the rain on two fronts over the weekend.

A waterlogged pitch at Lyons Lane saw the firsts have their game abandoned for a second week running, while the wet weather denied the seconds what looked like being a victory at Oxton’s fourths.

Opener Bob McDonald hit a superb 90 as Appleton closed on 177-8 from their 45 overs and the hosts were then struggling on 34-3 when rain brought an early end to proceedings.

The thirds lost by eight wickets to Wilmslow Wayfarers’ seconds and the fourths were beaten by nine wickets at Winnington Park’s seconds having been bowled out for just 109.

In more positive news, the Appleton Tigers women’s team edged home by just one wicket against Chester Boughton Hall.

Captain Nat Long was the key performer, taking 4-7 with the ball before keeping her nerve to hit the winning runs with the bat with just three balls to spare.
