AN extraordinary over from James Rudd set Warrington up for a much-needed, two-wicket victory over Weaverham on Saturday, ending an eight-match winless run.

Despite bowling only five deliveries in the match, Rudd claimed four wickets without conceding a single run at Walton Lea.

Rudd’s display cleaned up the Weaverham tail as the visitors were dismissed for just 108, vindicating skipper Richard Heaney’s decision to field after winning the toss.

The rest of the wickets were shared around the Warrington attack, with Johan Els finishing with figures of 2-21 and Brad McIntosh claiming 2-33.

Opening bowlers Will Fleetwood and Ashley Scholes took a wicket each to set up a relatively simple run chase for the hosts.

Warrington’s reply got off to a reasonable start, with Heaney and fellow opener Malcolm Agar putting on 27 for the first wicket.

However, things started to go wrong from there as the game threatened to run away from the hosts.

McIntosh’s knock of 19 was their top score as none of the Warrington batsmen went on to make a significant score.

With wickets falling regularly, Scholes stayed calm after coming in at number 10 to hit the winning runs.

Following their first victory since the opening day of the season, Warrington move out of the relegation zone in the Cheshire County Cricket League Division One.

However, they face a tricky trip to third-placed Widnes on Saturday.

The seconds were on the wrong end of the result against neighbours Grappenhall, falling to a seven-wicket loss at Broad Lane.

Skipper Simon Swain’s knock of 76, supported by 41 from Isaac Webster, led Warrington to a defendable total of 183-9.

Ben Cagna and Matt Titchard took three wickets each for Grappers, who knocked off the runs to inflict a first defeat of the season upon Warrington.

Will Sharp made 67 for the visitors, with Josh Hayes also passing the half-century mark. Webster, David Lee and Paolo Manfredi took a wicket each for Warrington, who host their Widnes counterparts on Saturday.

At the same time, the thirds host Port Sunlight’s seconds, while the fourths travel to neighbours Appleton.
