GLAZEBURY produced a dominant performance to win the ‘derby’ with Appleton at Lyons Lane and guarantee Cheshire Cricket Alliance Division One survival.

Electing to bat first, Appleton’s highest partnership was 23 as Glazebury’s bowlers dismissed their hosts for 77 in 40 overs.

Paul Charlton’s 3 for 25 off 10 overs led the way, with Hakeem Dahou taking 2 for 9 off six overs with the new ball.

Tom Wilkinson, 3 for 18 off 14, proved difficult to play, with Matt Shailer and Jon Gibbons also taking wickets.

Glazebury lost both openers cheaply, but Wayne Hargreaves, 19, and Dave Mason, 15, steadied the ship before Chris Lord, 17 not out, and Wilkinson, 13 not out, took the visitors to 81 for 4 to seal a six-wicket victory in 19.4 overs.

The 25 points moves Glazebury above Appleton into sixth place, with one match remaining at home to relegation-threatened Stretton.

Glazebury’s seconds entertained champions-elect Port Sunlight in Division Four and were beaten by 35 runs.

Choosing to bat, the Wirral side looked like posting a big total at 61 for 1.

Chris Ayre, 4 for 81, and Sean Caine, 4 for 54, bowled unchanged with energy and guile for 24 overs, restricting the Port to 139 for 9 off 48 overs to leave the outcome in the balance at tea.

Despite a cameo 14 from Andy Durrington, three early wickets left Glazebury behind the eight-ball at 22 for 3.

A stand of 52 for the next wicket between Phil McCue (27) and Paul Warhurst (19) made it 74 for 3, before the game swung Port’s way with a flurry of wickets leaving Glazebury 86 for 8.

Glazebury finished on 104, they end the season at neighbours Stretton on Saturday.
