JOHN Reece reports a busy afternoon at our Woodshaw Reservoir during a session last week.

He fished pole and soft pellet to catch 18 crucians, all around the 2lbs mark, plus two chub of the same stamp.

It’s worth a visit, as evidently the fish have spawned and by all accounts they are ‘on the munch’.

Also in Wigan, our Worthington Lakes complex sees Adlington Reservoir open again for fishing tomorrow, Friday, after being closed for the past three months.

Ackers Pit must rate among our least-used fisheries despite it being full of fish, and with easy access and parking.

Our local bailiff is reconstructing and re-surfacing all the pegs, so you can virtually fish in your slippers.

Members this week were catching carp, tench, roach, and crucians; no complicated methods, just back-to-basics waggler fishing.

At last, following a 90-day closed-season for coarse fishing, our river fisheries are open again for business from tomorrow, Friday.

Let’s hope the fish are in feeding mood for our first Mersey Association Contest on Sunday after EA Fisheries bailiffs spotted a large shoal of bream spawning in the weedy margins.

Meanwhile on Saturday week, June 24, our regular Mersey series starts.

The draw, from 9am, is at Kingsway allotments.

Our disabled and over 60s match on Monday was fished this week on the Bridgewater Canal at Hill Top.

Lennie Dutton claimed a win with a net of roach for 2-14-12.

Roy Rogers, the runner-up, was only two ounces behind with a weight of 2-12-12.

Despite the low totals, it was a fairly close contest.

It’s always a last resort when our committee exclude somebody, but on Monday two anglers became ex-members when they showed total disregard for our rules.

Our association headquarters at 52 Parker Street are open as usual every Friday, between 7pm and 9pm for memberships, subscriptions, nigh-permit renewals and any queries.

Keep sending your catch reports by email to frank@warrington-anglers.org.uk, or call me on 01928 716238.
