I VISITED Statham Pool last weekend, and I have to say it looked stunning.

As a bonus there have also been some decent catches reported, and Alan Morris certainly enjoyed his four-hour session on the pocket-sized water.

Fishing the waggler, and loose-feeding maggots, he landed between 80 and 100 fish.

They were mostly small roach, some nice skimmer bream, plus bonus catches that included a 3lb chub, 4lb bream and a 6lb common carp that put a bend in his rod!

For the record, I picked up several discarded crisp packets during my time there.

As a responsible member, I disposed of it at home.

It is rare that we have game reports, but May bank holiday Monday was an exception when Chris Brookes – who was fly-fishing on our stretch of the River Dee at Worthenbury – landed a salmon weighing 13lbs.

It was his second of the season, and sport should improve with a few good downpours forecast.

Aside from committee members and bailiffs, there was a disappointing turnout of volunteers for a working party at Appleton Reservoir on Saturday.

After all of the comments on social media with regards to bringing back night-fishing, only two of our younger members lent a hand – thanks are due to them.

Working parties are not obligatory, but I would have expected better.

If you are interested, we have reinstated night-fishing on a trial basis.

Whether it continues is down to you; any litter, yours or not, should be taken home.

The warm temperatures have put fish – mainly carp – on many of our waters in a spawning mood, and pegs where they were in action last weekend were closed for fishing by bailiffs.

It has been suggested we shut fisheries, but as species do not spawn in unison those waters would be closed for a considerable length of time.

Our association headquarters at Parker Street are open as usual every Friday, between 7pm and 9pm, for memberships, subscriptions, night-permit renewals and any queries.

Keep on sending catch details by email to frank@warrington-anglers.org.uk, or call me on 01928 716238.
