A SURPRISE catch this week by member Graham Lesley from the small pool at the Mount of an eel weighing 3lbs 8oz 0dr.

Brian Jones informed me that generally carp are being caught but silvers and tench sport is sporadic.

I am led to believe that committee member Ade Green also caught a massive eel from Grey Mist this past week but did not put it on the scales. It certainly looked a specimen weight.

Nick Roberts took his son Sam, aged 10, to Cicely Pool a couple of weeks ago and Sam fancied fishing a quivver tip for the bigger fish whilst his dad opted for pole tactics.

Both were fishing with red maggot but Sam was soon into a fish and, after a short fight, a crucian around the 2lbs mark lay in his landing net and dad hadn’t yet wet a line.

Nick was also soon into a bite every put-in but couldn’t get past the three-inch roach, whereas his young protégé was catching less but of a better stamp.

Then Sam’s tip went round and he was into a decent fish and eventually the biggest perch either of them had ever seen lay in the landing net.

The scales went round to 3-10-0, but even with scale discrepancies it was a wonderful specimen which I am certain Sam will never forget.

Appleton Reservoir is producing some decent roach catches and this weekend, Ian Rogers, fishing a maggot feeder, hit into a shoal of quality silvers with the majority 8ozs and the best around 1.5lbs.

Also, some good-sized carp are being reported in spite of the night fishing ban still in place. Please keep the car park locked at all times.

I know the Bridgewater Canal isn’t getting much attention nowadays, but the water that Warrington Anglers Association have controlled for close on a century still holds decent fish and is always worth a visit.

John Spiers enjoyed a session on the pole at Moore this weekend, fishing against the ‘stick-ups’ feeding micro-pellet plus a few grains of hemp with a 4mm offering on the hook saw him catch some quality roach plus seven bream around the 3lbs mark.

Just a brief heads-up that, after issues raised by members, the new rules on night fishing I reported last week have been shelved for the time being.

The committee will have a fresh look at the issues bearing in mind some constructive emails from members.

WAA Headquarters at 52 Parker Street are open as usual every Friday between 7 and 9pm for new members, subscriptions, night permit renewals, and any queries.

Please email catch details to frank@warrington-anglers.org.uk or give me a call on 01928 716238.
