THE tench and carp are waking up on Grey Mist Mere this week.

Norbert Molnare landed a 22lb carp taken on Krill boilie on Monday.

Eric J Smith and his grandson Callum also visited the Mist and caught a tench apiece on maggot feeder.

Three volunteers turned out on Saturday to join our committee members and bailiffs at Grey Mist in filling two one-ton tote sacks of rubbish.

There was quite a large proportion that had ‘overflowed’ from the adjacent household waste site but also plenty left by those who do not deserve to be called anglers.

Mark Pryor and Steve Draper enjoyed a session on the River Dane at Holmes Chapel where, after catching a brace of trout, Steve moved to a different swim and ended up with nine chub. All of his fish fell to either meat or caster using a hemp-packed feeder.

Steve managed two chub but still had an enjoyable day, unlike myself on the Dee at Worthenbury where, after hooking my one and only fish of the afternoon, I promptly lost it!

At the weekend, the last Sunday River Mersey match until the season reopens on June 16 was another low-weight affair won by Martin Lenihan with 20 small roach taken on groundbait feeder and maggot for a weight of 2lbs 2ozs 0drs. Jim Gannon took second place with 1-13-0. The guys will be hoping for better sport during their mid-year series.

Following a few section wins and a trio of placings, committee member Graham Belton won our Bridgewater Canal disabled and over 60s match on Monday for the first time this year.

Graham drew an end peg at Preston Brook and included a couple of bonus skimmer bream in his catch to weigh in 2-14-8.

He caught his fish on pole and bread punch tactics.

Ron Durr was in second place with 1-9-10. No other angler broke a pound.

WAA headquarters at 52 Parker Street are open every Friday between 7pm and 9pm for new memberships, subscriptions, night permit renewals, and any queries.
