IT is really great to take your kids fishing, even though they beat you!

Leon Preston, aged 6, and his older brother Marley were at Grey Mist Mere on Sunday with father Mark and reeled in an impressive personal best, weighing in at 24lbs 10ozs 0drs.

The fish fell for a single Nash pink boilie from the Railway Post swim. Leon fished about thirty yards out using a 1.5oz lead and size 8 Fox hook set up stiff rig style. As for his dad, well Mark couldn’t buy a bite!

Don’t forget this year, in an effort to get more youngsters into angling, senior members can take anyone aged 12 and under on a one-to-one basis to four designated fisheries, Woodshaw Reservoir, Bridgewater Canal, Ackers pit, and Offa’s Dyke (recently stocked).

Arley Reservoir (the middle one) at Worthington has produced a few roach and bream this past week despite the change in conditions. I know it is a bit of a hike, but if you take a trolley it is flat going and worth a visit.

One member decided to go ‘off piste’ on Sandiway small lake on Monday and paid the price when he became stuck to his axles.

It cost him a hundred and eighty quid to be exact for a tow out. A lesson there somewhere, stay on the car parks and access routes provided.

Jimmy Byrne added to his last week’s Sunday Mersey Match Series success, notching up another win with 1-11-4 made up of a small eel and 10 roach taken on ground bait feeder and maggot, while Mersey devote Paul Harding needed only 14ozs for second place. Bites were at a premium!

Our Bridgewater Canal Disabled and Over 60s match on Monday was held again at Preston Brook, where the water was almost chocolate brown which gave fish some cover.

Lenny Dutton put together a net of skimmers and roach for first place with 4-10-0 taken on the pole using bread and pinkie. George Hollis was second with 4-2-8.

Many members like to take pictures of their fish and it is catered for in our rules, but they must be taken at the time of capture, on no account must a fish be sacked or retained.

Members should have their unhooking mat wetted, container of water standing by and camera at the ready. A member who shall be nameless actually rang home a couple of weeks ago for his father to bring a camera!

Whilst on the subject of rules, if you are not booked on for night fishing then you cannot go onto a fishery until one hour before sunrise and must be off one hour after sunset.

WAA headquarters at 52 Parker Street are open every Friday between 7pm and 9pm for new members, subscriptions, night permit renewals, and any queries.
