ERIC Smith had an eventful time at Cicely Mill Pool on Sunday, where everything that could go wrong did.

He accidentally kicked over pots of bait, got rigs tangled and was caught in various species of flora.

However his patience was rewarded and by dusk he had landed 22 crucians, with 16 of those weighing more than 2lbs.

He initially catapulted in half-a-dozen large pouches of hemp before tackling up to start his session using a method feeder with an 8mm pineapple wafter on the hook.

Ian Woods took young sons Rowan, Sammy and Alex to Ackers Pit, where the together they caught lots of scale-perfect roach weighing up to a pound using waggler and loose-feeding maggots.

Their haul also included a bonus mirror carp and a 12ozs skimmer.

We’ve never stocked the latter there, so can only surmise they came through the supply pipe from the Bridgewater Canal as fry.

Meanwhile Mark Pritchard enjoyed his best session to date from peg four on the River Mersey.

He fished a small waggler close in, fed with maggot and hemp, and was immediately into fish before stopping count at 50.

After changing to caster, he caught a better stamp of fish with roach touching the pound mark.

Match organiser Ray Boden celebrated a double in our Mersey Series fixtures at the weekend.

He fished pole and maggot on Saturday, landing 8-11-0 of roach and perch to pip Martin James to first prize.

Our webmaster adopted the same method, but alternating between maggot and caster for his 7-9-8.

Ray repeated the trick on Sunday, this time with 15-10-0 of roach and skimmers.

Meticulous in his preparation, he is usually in the frame – or close to it – in every match he fishes.

The leading three weights were all in double figures, and anglers needed more than 8lbs to claim a section win.

Derek Bibby was a convincing winner in our disabled and over 60s match on the River Mersey, netting roach and perch taken on pole and maggot.

That man Boden was runner-up, putting 9-1-0 on the scales using the same tactics.
