ONE of our members has asked if High Legh Fisheries have been well-stocked.

The answer is yes – earlier this year when a netting team thinned the silver fish stocks at Woodshaw Reservoir where they had been breeding like mad.

It’s an ideal spot to switch off; the surroundings are quiet, and you can catch small carp, tench, bream, perch, roach, and rudd.

A recent working party there has opened up almost all the pegs.

Steve Daley, one of our bailiffs, took his three-year-old son to a taster session to Statham Pool.

In less than an hour, the youngster had caught 25 small roach!

It’s an ideal water; peaceful, and you’re guaranteed to catch.

I’ve received good reports from our stretch of the River Wyre.

One angler described it as ‘a jewel’ after filling a bag of 50-plus roach, dace, and chublets during an afternoon session last week.

Association bailiff Neil Buck managed two chub at the same spot, both around 4lbs, until he was interrupted by an otter.

Stuart Peters visited our section of the Wye, where he was unable to tempt any of its famous barbel.

However he did manage five quality chub, plus some smaller ones too, until the bites dried up and a flotilla of canoes arrived on the scene.

Martin Kettle’s winning haul, weighing in at 8-10-0, was caught using the bolognaise method during the Mersey Series match on Saturday.

Second spot went to Alan Birchall, who landed a similar roach and perch catch taken on pole and maggot.

He went one better on Sunday, adopting the same approach as Kettle 24 hours earlier for a catch of 11-2-0.

Our disabled and over 60s match on the Bridgewater Canal was difficult for the time of the year, Jimmy Byrne taking first prize with a skimmer – backed up by small roach – to land 3-8-8.

Geoff Brooks and Stu Patterson shared the runners-up position.

It’s a stretch that hasn’t fished well since it was dredged a few years ago.

Before that, it was prolific.
