Warrington Anglers' Association

DICKIE Wernham celebrated a first win of 2016 when he fished our latest disabled and over 60s match on the Trent and Mersey Canal last Monday.

His success was made sweeter by the fact he sat at the next peg to regular prize-winner Jimmy Byrne, who landed 4-12-8 to finish as runner-up.

The victor’s haul of 6-9-4 was made up of roach and small skimmers taken on the pole, alternating between bread punch and caster.

Newcomer Stephen Oakes decided to try Grey Mist Mere on Wednesday as an introduction to a Warrington Anglers’ Association venue.

Fishing a PVA bag crammed with carpy goodies, he only managed on fish – but was well-pleased when he landed a common of exactly 25lbs.

Other members have reported cracking tench catches this past week.

Those at the Mist switched on at around 8pm for Andy Humphries, who landed four at around 5lbs a decent-sized eel during a 90-minute spell.

All fell for feeder-fished rod maggot and worm cocktail offerings.

On Sunday, Eric Smith and grandson Callum were joined by ‘Fishless’ Fletcher on a trip to Cicely Mill Pool.

The former enjoyed a produdctive session, putting a 4lbs bream and seven crucians – five of them over 2lbs and the heaviest a 3-1-0 specimen – on the scales.

Callum caught four crucians, including a personal-best of 2lbs, plus a bream of around 4lbs.

Meanwhile ‘Fishless’ belied his nickname to land three crucians to 2lbs along with a tench weighing 3lbs.

Fish are starting to spawning at a number of our fisheries, so it’s timely to remind members they must not use any pegs where this is currently happening.

Nor should they cast to such areas.

This is a fish-welfare issue, and the committee will come down hard on any unsporting behaviour.

Let the fish spawn in peace, without being disturbed.

A memorial match for Dave Berry will take place at Meadow View Fisheries on Monday, May 30, from 11am.
