EAGER newcomer Jan Fleming fished two venues last week, starting at Woodshaw Reservoir on Tuesday.
She fished on the pole at six metres and with loose-feeding maggot she caught a roach after virtually every put-in.
Although nothing stretched her elastic to the limit, Jan declared it an enjoyable afternoon’s sport.
A trip to High Legh Fisheries followed 48 hours later, when she used a different approach; a small method feeder and a groundbait/pellet mix with a short link and banded pellet.
After two hours, her tip arched around and it was game on.
Following a nail-biting moment when the fish tore off on its initial run, a mirror carp of around eight to ten pounds lay in her landing net.
It turned out to be her only catch of the session, but she says a return visit is definitely on the cards.
Sunday’s Mersey Series match was another dour affair, with winner Ed Frangleton needing only 3lbs to take first prize.
His haul consisted of a bonus 8ozs skimmer, plus roach taken on groundbait feeder and maggot.
Only 2ozs separated the next three competitors, with Jim Gannon finishing second with 1-2-0 of roach from the same method.
Committee member Graham Belton, runner-up to Derek Bibby seven days’ earlier, went one better to record a first win of the year in our disabled and over 60s match on Monday.
His all-roach catch was taken fishing the pole, alternating between bread and caster for a net of 3-13-10.
Weights then plummeted faster than a speeding bullet with the next three anglers – Jimmy Byrne, George Barber and Barry Chambers – tied for second place.
Bites were so hard to come by that only one other entrant weighed in a ‘net of fish’.
There is a change of venue, to Preston Brook, next week.
