IF you fancy a piking session on the Bridgewater Canal, you could do far worse than follow Alan Dillon’s example.

He simply followed my silver-fish catch reports.

There’s no need to print a map of the location, as it’s a no-brainer.

Alan landed four fish, with the best at just touching the 8lbs mark, that each fell to rubber drop-shot lures – all good sport.

There were good catches on the canal, at Hough’s Bridge, during our disabled and over 60s match on Monday.

Fish usually shoal each year there during the winter months, then spread in search of spots to spawn as the temperatures rise.

Jimmy Byrne took first prize, fishing the pole and bread punch to record a weight of 6-7-2.

Keith Wernham was in second place, with a similar net of fish, putting 5-11-12 on the scales.

I’m sad to report that our Sunday Mersey Series has been postponed until further notice after a seal put paid to chances of a bite.

I will advise in this column when the situation changes.

Members should note that there is no public access waterside at the association-owned Sandiway Lakes.

There are designated rights of way clearly signed on the perimeter and central roadway.

Warrington anglers, by separate agreement, allow a permissive path – along the Oak Tree end – on the large water.

Please warn trespassers they should stay on designated routes.

On a positive note, and despite the weather, there are signs that fish are feeding there.

Many thanks to those who have responded already to my request for catch pictures from our waters to use on display boards for a stand at the Northern Angling Show next month.

It is scheduled for February 20 and 21 at EventCity in Manchester.

Photographs will need to be enlarged, printed and mounted before then, so search your archives for examples and get them to me as soon as possible.

Our headquarters at Parker Street are open every Friday, from 7pm, for night-permit renewals, subscriptions, memberships and queries.

Keep sending catch reports to frank@warrington-anglers.org.uk, or call me on 01928 716238.
