IAN Wood took son Sammy, aged five, to Ackers Pit on Saturday, when not only did they enjoy the sunshine but the youngster also caught loads of pristine roach.

The icing on the cake was a chunky crucian taken at the end of a session lasting a couple of hours.

Young anglers are the future of our sport.

Tony Rough fished the River Dee at Shocklach on Sunday, moving downstream a short distance after a quiet hour.

Trotting down with an Avon float feeding maggots and hemp – with a bronze maggot on the hook – he landed 15 grayling, 10 trout and lots of dace during an enjoyable session.

The only people he saw all morning were passing canoeists.

Jimmy Gannon won our Mersey Series match on Saturday with 14-12-0 made up of six skimmers – the best weighing in at 2lbs – and the rest small roach and perch taken on legered maggot.

Derek Bibby was runner-up after netting 13-1-0, which included a bonus bream of 4lbs along with roach and perch all taken on pole and maggot.

Organiser Ray Boden recorded a win in Sunday’s match with a nice net of roach and perch taken on pole and maggot for 9-12-0.

Ant Higham was second with 8-7-0.

George Barber put together a net of skimmers and small roach on pole and bread punch to win the latest disabled and over 60s match on the Bridgewater Canal at Delph Lane.

He is regularly in the frame, but this time had more than 1lb to spare over Jimmy Byrne.

Warrington Anglers’ Association was represented at the Angling Trust National Championship on the River Trent at the weekend, finishing in penultimate position in Division Two.
