PAUL Floyd started his river season with a 24-hour session on our stretch of the Wye, and was surprised to have it all to himself.

He reports that the fishing was outstanding, catching six barbel including a long-awaited double of 10-5-0. He also had four chub to just over 4lbs.

All fish came to running rig feeder tactics and homemade boilie.

Following a change of venue, closer to home, to our Ribble fishery at Hurst Green he landed 12-5-0 barbel and a chub of 5lbs – not a bad week’s fishing!

Some quality tench are coming out of both lakes at Sandiway, with Ken Buckley netting two at 9lbs – and another at 7lbs – on Tuesday.

The smaller water is proving popular at present; there is currently more carp action, mainly doubles, and rumours of a 34lbs-plus fish caught last week.

Weights were down in our Junior Woodshaw Reservoir match, but Megan Connell collected her first win of the series with a mixed net of bream and roach weighing 5-4-0 taken on pole and disco maggots.

Jimmy Byrne clocked up another win in our disabled and over 60s weekly match on Monday with a net of small silver fish for 3-9-10.

Lenny Dutton was second with 2-14-8.

They have decided on a change of venue, to the River Mersey, for next week’s match in the hope landing some heavier weights.

The first River Mersey match of the new season was held on Saturday, and organiser Ray Boden chalked up a first win with 8-15-0 made up of a 4lb-bream, skimmers, and perch caught on maggot or worm on ledger and quiver tip.

Ray was also the victor of our first Association Contest, also held on the Mersey, with a couple of quality bream, skimmers, and perch for 14-1-0 taken again on the tip using maggot or worm.

Martin Lenihan fished the same method for second with 7-12-0.

The Woodshaw Junior Series match, held on Monday, saw Dane Rawlinson take an early lead after winning with 19-13-0 of roach, crucians, and tench taken on pole and pellet.
