A TRIP to Rixton Claypits last week by Trevor Green saw him enjoy, in his words, 'a best ever day’s fishing'.

Using a small groundbait feeder set-up and double maggot on the hook, he literally had the bream queuing to suck up his offerings.

He ran out of bait, but not before his tally was 48 fish; mainly bream plus a few roach and three tench.

TheMount is rarely out of the news lately.

A low water table has more or less created three pools, each capable of providing excellent sport.

It seems tench headed for the heavier-weeded small pools as the levels dropped and, with that in mind, Eddie Simonds set up for his session.

He started with PVA bags filled with micro pellets and crushed halibut with a small pop-up on the hook, and after several casts decided it was time for a brew.

As he unscrewed his flask it was fish on, but he lost the first two.

A change of hook length put Eddie back in charge, and he ended his session with 14 fish.

The largest were like peas in a pod at 6-2-0 apiece.

This fishery is not all tench and carp by any means; it is also producing fine roach sport on pole or wagger tactics from the larger main pool along with some quality bream.

There are no special baits needed, just a pint of maggots.

I wonder if anyone has tried hemp or tares, because I reckon if the weather warms up we could see some hectic sessions.

If you try it, let me know how you get on.

I couldn’t tell anyone how many fish I’d caught beyond a dozen, but Trev swears by his counter.

Fish are at this time heavy with spawn around our lakes and waters, getting ready for their annual breeding antics.

While I wouldn’t expect any of our members to target fish in these circumstances, our bailiffs will be closing pegs or areas at short notice in the interests of animal welfare.

The River Alyn is proving popular with game anglers, with mainly small trout and grayling as reported catches.

Our disabled and over 60s match this week saw Alan Brown, who has rarely been out of the frame of late, take a clear win with an all-roach catch of 3-5-2 taken on the pole and punch bread.

Ronnie Durr was in the runner-up spot, two pounds adrift of the winner with 1-3-12.

At this time of the year the fish generally congregate near to spawning areas, so low weights are no surprise.
