FOLLOWING the resignation of Barry Fleming due to ill health, we advertised for a new head bailiff and received three applications.

After careful consideration, and due to the fact that there is a lot of work for a single person, we decided to appoint all of them.

Although they have equal responsibility, James Makin will be head bailiff with Ian Robinson and Mike Dench his deputies.

A working party will remove weed at Grey Mist Mere this Saturday from 9am.

Those who book on for Friday night should be off the water by 8am at the latest.

You need real stamina to fish the Mount, as Paul Roberts will testify.

During his night sessions last Friday and Saturday, sport was so hectic he had to reel his rods in by 2am to get some much-needed sleep.

He managed 27 carp, which included 10 doubles, with the best at 16lbs. All fell to boilies fished in open water.

Mike Pritchard enjoyed his session on Statham Pool on Saturday when fishing a light waggler one and a half rods out.

He ended with 60 fish, catching roach, skimmers, and hybrids to 12ozs using pinkie or red maggots.

A swap to casters started to bring on the better roach as well as a chub and decent mirror carp.

Our disabled & over-60s match, fished at Walton this week, saw John Dagnall take the winner’s purse with 4-8-3.

He included a proper bonus fish in his catch by way of a 4lbs-plus bream, to which he added a few roach.

There is no truth in the rumour that second-placed Ron Durr, who weighed 1-9-14 on the next peg, was praying for a break.

Anglers’ catches, for the most part, were made up of the occasional skimmer bream, roach, and gudgeon, but not a single perch.

I visited High Legh Fisheries on Sunday to put up a WAA sign, and just chanced to have my tackle and some bait in the car.

I had the place to myself, and the reason why soon became obvious as other anglers had obviously seen the weather reports; no sooner had I set up, a gale blew up bringing with it driving rain.

I stuck with it, feeding micro-pellet and maggot on a now much-reduced pole line, hanging on for grim death until after a few minutes my float dipped when a nice rudd took the treble maggot.

A dozen or so followed, then it went dead.

While daydreaming and trying to keep warm, my pole elastic shot out and my first carp, around 6lbs or so, was soon landed along with three others.
