THIS week fish have been spawning at various waters and some pegs were made off limits, but despite this often necessitating in immediate and closures all members cooperated fully.

I have only had reported one spawning casualty so far so everything is crossed.

It is not uncommon for fish to be stressed post-spawning and, coupled with the hectic breeding ritual during which their protective mucus takes a real hammering, it is understandable they can become susceptible to parasites. Members should report any signs immediately and if possible take a few photographs.

Hot off the press and as I was finishing up my column, David Poole finished his fishing at Grey Mist Mere. Something wrong there!

He was made up with his session which included a new PB mirror of 13.35lbs and one of 12.85lbs.

Both fish fell for balanced squid flavour boilies. David had more runs but lost fish in the weed which has now become a problem. The club will be carrying out some selective control.

Phil Hancock reports landing his PB tench at 10-14-0 from Moore Quarry when it succumbed to his method feeder and sweetcorn approach.

He lost two others plus a third at the rim of the landing net he reckoned was even bigger than his new PB.

Carping mad teenager Lewis Harmes had, as he describes it, ‘a blinding session on the Mount’ when he visited the fishery with his mate Dan, that saw the duo land 10 carp between them.

Lewis had a cracking common of 23lbs and another at 18lbs, the others around the 10lbs mark.

Night fishing has been put back on the Mount after being withdrawn due to pegs being submerged as a result of this year’s monsoons.

It will be restricted to four anglers and can only be booked for a single night from Monday to Thursday. We will reappraise the situation as more pegs become fishable.

Our disabled and over 60s match on Monday saw Derek Bibby take the honours with a 10-5-0 net, including two bream that accounted for 8lbs. Lenny Dutton was not too far behind with a similar catch for exactly 10lbs. At the end of this month the mystery is that these large bream will seemingly vanish and be absent from match catches until April/May next year.

Please keep those catch reports coming in as they are invaluable to this column and fellow members planning fishing trips. Either ring me on 01928 716238 or email frank@warrington-anglers.org.uk. HQ 52, Parker Street is open as usual between 7 & 9pm on Friday, for subscriptions, new memberships/night permits, or any queries.
