SEVERAL members this past week have incurred unnecessary extra cost when renewing their Environment Agency fishing licence online.

I would point out that if you use postoffice.co.uk/rod-fishing-licence you will be charged the set fee.

However, on another site it has become clear it will cost you £11 extra for them to ‘process’ your licence, and on a different site it will cost you an extra £20 to avail yourself of their service.

To me it’s a no-brainer.

Either use the Post Office official site set down above or if you are unsure of web purchase procedure, visit your local Post Office and by doing so perhaps help to keep its doors open.

As regards to actual fishing over the Easter holiday, well, it leaves a lot to be desired.

Sport was generally poor in the bright sunshine but continuing freezing Arctic conditions.

I couldn’t think of an excuse to dust off my tackle and venture on to the bankside but the magnetic pull of our sport and the remote chance of a few fish did tempt some members, although the majority of anglers were simply going through the motions.

The Bridgewater Canal at Walton continues to produce a few fish, however.

It has been mainly skimmers, roach, and the occasional marauding pike. Use bread punch, pinkie or caster for the better stamp of fish.

C&D Pools at Wigan are providing some sport and our bailiffs report small fish being caught on both waters.

Our volunteers have been busy at Woodshaw Reservoir improving parking arrangements at this popular fishery.

I know that I have said this over many winters, or should I now say spring as it feels like the former, but wrap up well if you visit this fishery as the prevailing wind there is particularly cruel.

Keep sending your catch reports to 01928 716238 or frank@warrington-anglers.org.uk.

HQ 52, Parker Street is open as usual between 7pm and 9pm on Friday, for subscriptions, new memberships/night permits or any queries.
