Oulton Raiders 50 Crosfields 12

CROSFIELDS battled gamely but succumbed to a superb display by National Conference League Division Two leaders Oulton Raiders.

With two games of the season remaining, the defeat means Soap’s play-off hopes are hanging by the thinnest of threads.

Two converted tries and a penalty allowed Oulton to open up a 14-0 lead early on as Soap were forced into almost constant defence.

Mark Brennan’s side continued to battle hard but were up against a home side operating on a low error count which allowed them to run in three more tries before the break to build up a 32-point advantage.

However, Soap emerged from the second half re-energised and, after forcing an error deep in Oulton territory, Jack Reid dummied through from a set scrum play for a try he converted himself.

Shortly afterwards, Brad Stanway produced a clever chip through for Reid to chase and touch down his second of the afternoon.

Nathan Taylor lost the ball over the line as Crosfields continue to press, but they were soon forced onto the back foot again.

The constant defending of the first half took its toll and Oulton ran three more tries past a valiant Soap side.

Brennan’s side welcome Saddleworth Rangers to Hood Lane on Saturday, kick off 2.30pm.
