Woolston Rovers 46 Waterhead Warriors 22

DESPITE his side racking up their third victory in a row, Woolston Rovers head coach John Fieldhouse says his side “lost their focus” in the second half.

Rovers were 28-6 up at half time thanks to tries from Sean Conway, Lewis Hoarty, Ryan Hickman, Harry Files and Glyn Roberts, who kicked seven conversions at Monks Sports Club.

Hickman doubled his tally after the break, with Ryan Brown and Aaron Barber also crossing for Woolston.

However, despite the convincing scoreline, Fieldhouse was less than impressed with his side’s display after the interval.

“I was happy with the win but not with the way we played in the second half,” he said.

“We started really brightly and the opening half saw us play some great rugby, but after the break we lost our focus once again and failed to control the ball.

“This allowed Waterhead to gain some confidence and it was a much more even second half than it should have been.

“We were trying to score from every set and went away from our structures as well as having some poor defensive reads.

“The positive is that it is another two points in the bag that keeps our promotion dream alive.”

Conway forced his way over in the second minute for Rovers before Roberts’ break lead to him adding his name to the scoresheet after combining with Justin Becker.

Peter Davies hit back with a converted try for Waterhead, but a nice offload from Christian Taylor allowed Hoarty to sneak over in the corner.

Fine play from Matt Clarke allowed Hickman over for his first before Brown sent Files through left of the posts to complete a fine first-half display for Rovers.

Brown finished off a nice move just after the break to extend Woolston’s lead, but Jamie Mayall’s try kept the Warriors in touch.

Davies scored again to narrow the gap further, but Hickman’s second allowed Rovers to regain control.

Barber picked up a loose ball to race home before Waterhead had the final say through Scott Owen’s try.
