WOOLSTON Rovers hope to build on their success against Dewsbury Moor when they travel to Halifax to face Elland in National Conference League Division Three on Saturday.

The green and golds overhauled Dewsbury 50-14 at the weekend with a display labelled as “excellent” by head coach John Fieldhouse.

“We need to go to Elland with the same intensity and discipline to ensure that we get the right result,” said Fieldhouse.

“Elland have not had the best of seasons so far but that doesn’t mean we can afford to take them lightly.

“We have seen many surprising results in this league so far this year to know that you have to be fully focused in every match.

“We cannot afford to drop points if we are to keep our promotion push alive.”

Rovers had suffered their heaviest defeat of the season at Dewsbury Moor in April but responded in fine style to run in nine tries in a fluent display.

Billy Maunder created a hat-trick of tries for Sean Conway as Rovers assembled an 18-4 lead but Woolston could only shrug off the visitors after they had cut the gap to 28-14 at the start of the second half.

“I was very happy that the players put into practice our game plan which I said would win us the game if they executed it,” said Fieldhouse.

“Beating Dewsbury by such a big margin will give the players belief and confidence, as they are a good side who did pose us problems but we kept our shape and snuffed them out.

“Our completion rate of 76 per cent was really good and I was pleased that we showed plenty of patience.

“Even though our attack was on fire our try-line defence was equally impressive and that is something we have been working on in training.”

Wil Maudsley crossed for a try in each half and there were further scores from Alex Dunne, Conner Muir, Harry Files and Ryan Hickman.

Will Chadwick, who was awarded man of the match, converted seven of the nine tries.

Woolston opened the scoring in the fourth minute when the forwards moved them into a good position deep in the Maroons half and the ball reached scrum half Maunder whose inside pass found second row Conway who skipped round the cover to score at the right of the posts. Full back Chadwick converted and then five minutes later more fine work from the Rovers big men moved then close to the Dewsbury line and a long ball from Maunder put Conway through a gap to score wide out on the right. Chadwick added the conversion.

Dewsbury hit back just before the midway point of the half when centre Jacob Flathers was held just short but from the play the ball on the last tackle. Scrum half Aiden Ineson threw the ball through his legs to winger Sam Thornton who scored in the right corner but Rovers were soon back in control as more fine work from Maunder found Conway running at an angle to crash over at the side of the posts for his hat-trick try. Chadwick added the conversion.

Just after the half hour mark Dewsbury were awarded a penalty on their own 10-metre line and Thornton took a quick tap that caught Rovers flat footed and he raced ninety metres unopposed to score on the right. Ineson converted but again Rovers replied when slick hands along the line saw Maunder find centre Aaron Barber and he put winger Maudsley over in the right corner.

Right on the stroke of half time a long ball from Chadwick was superbly picked up by winger Dunne and he managed to squeeze over in the right corner despite the attention of four defenders. Chadwick goaled from the touchline to give his side a commanding 28-10 interval advantage.

Eight minutes into the second half the Maroons gave themselves a glimmer of hope when full back Max Vernon spotted a gap and went from dummy half to score wide out on the left but then just after the hour a clever chip up by the impressive Maunder was fumbled by the Moor defence and Maudsley pounced on the loose ball to score in the right corner. Chadwick again converted from wide out.

Rovers moved further clear when a superb 40metre break by prop forward Clarke split the Dewsbury line and he found loose forward Files on his inside who then sent stand off Muir racing away to score on the left and shortly afterwards second row Davy was held just short but from the play the ball Files went from dummy half and managed to twist in the tackle to touchdown on the left. Chadwick added the conversion.

Two minutes from time Rovers prop forward Hickman went from dummy half and crashed over from close range at the side of the posts. Chadwick converted to bring up the half century and round off a professional 50-14 win for the rampant Rovers.
