Woolston Rovers 54 Elland 10

WOOLSTON Rovers got their first victory of the season in fine style as a superb first-half showing saw them romp home on Saturday.

They ran 10 tries past Elland at Monks Sports Club, including two each for Lewis Hoarty and Chris Twigg, while Will Chadwick’s 18-point personal haul included a try and seven conversions.

Sean Conway, Dani Garcia O’Brien, Christian Taylor, Harry Files and Glyn Roberts also crossed for tries in a performance that had head coach John Fieldhouse purring with delight.

“I was very confident that we were on the right track and said to the lads in training during the week that if we can finish off more of our opportunities then we could put a big score on somebody,” he said.

“With a virtually perfect first-half performance, we racked up seven tries to completely dominate.

“My half time team talk was to challenge the players to keep Elland to ‘nil’ but we were not quite up to that task.

“I was very pleased with the win, the tries we scored and the manner of our performance for the majority of the game.”

Chadwick was instrumental early on as he sent Hoarty over on the right before his clever chip and chase paved the way for Conway to cross.

Henry Davies’ superb ball allowed Spanish international Garcia O’Brien to score on the left before winger Taylor was able to latch onto a fine pass from scrum-half Connor Muir.

Hoarty’s outlandish offload put Twigg over in the right corner as the onslaught continued and Hoarty went from provider to scorer shortly afterwards as Chadwick found him once again.

After Dan Fearnley was held up just short from a 30-metre break, Files dived over from dummy-half to give rampant Rovers a 36-point lead at the break.

Elland finally got themselves on the board after the interval through Liam Manning, but Chadwick was able to resume normal service as he capped his good display with a try.

After the visitors had Dehran Gibson sin-binned for dissent, Rovers made the extra man pay as first Roberts and then Twigg danced through the defence for tries.

Elland did have the last laugh as Chris Middleton scored on the left, but Rovers were left to celebrate a convincing performance.
