FORMER Latchford Albion junior Mike Cooper will rejoin the club as an ambassador when he returns to England to sign for Warrington Wolves.

The 27-year-old prop, who left The Wire for Australia in 2014, announced last week that he will return to The Halliwell Jones Stadium on a three-year deal next year.

Once his NRL and international commitments are complete, Cooper will take an active role within the club, utilising his experience to pass onto to players.

The three-cap England international has been playing his club rugby for NRL giants St George Illawarra Dragons, but it all started with Latchford and Cooper says he can’t wait to help the club out.

“It's a huge honour for me to be named as ambassador for Latchford Albion, this is the club that developed me into the player I am today,” he said.

“I think it's important to remember the hard work and dedication that goes in from all the volunteers to create such a great club for local players to develop and enjoy our great sport. They are the real ambassadors for the club.

“Once I return home I am looking to take an active role with the club and will be happy to assist with any coaching or advice I can offer but also I will be looking to create as strong a link as possible between Latchford Albion and Warrington Wolves.”

Albion’s director of rugby, Mike Byron, says he was desperate to get Cooper, who has made 60 NRL appearances since leaving England, on board as soon as he heard about his return.

“Mike along with Lee Birchall were instrumental in helping in securing the great facilities we have and offering him a role within the club seemed a natural progression and it is something as a club we are very proud of and is another statement of intent,” he said.

“Having known Mike since he was a youngster at the club I was keen to get him involved again upon his return to England.”
