Castleford Panthers 18 Woolston Rovers 25.

TWO tries from Chris Mellor helped Rovers produce an excellent comeback to win on the road against Castleford Panthers on Saturday.

Further scores from Josh Sudlow and Justin Becker, as well as four Will Chadwick conversions and a Billy Maunder drop goal, ensured John Fieldhouse’s side stayed in touch with leaders Crosfields at the top of the Division Three table.

However, despite praising their comeback, Fieldhouse was less than impressed with his side's first-half display.

"We only got half a job done really; we got the two points but we were really average in the first half on the back of a completion rate of only 21 per cent," he said.

"We had a serious conversation at half time and although Castleford did score first after the break we really dominated the last half an hour and turned things around.

"I cannot fault our defensive efforts at times, that really kept us in the game."

Having won only two games so far this season, the hosts came into the game as the league’s bottom side but they were more than a match for their visitors.

The Yorkshiremen came out of the traps well and a converted try gave them an early 6-0 lead.

They crossed again to extend that advantage to 12-0 before Sudlow finally got Rovers on the scoreboard, crashing over for a try converted by Chadwick.

That was how it stayed until the break, but Castleford started the second half strongly and restored their 12-point lead with another converted try.

However, that only served to spark Rovers into life and Mellor crossed for his first try to set the wheels in motion for a comeback.

Mellor went over again almost immediately and Chadwick’s conversion brought Rovers level as they looked to steal an unlikely victory.

Ten minutes from the end, Rovers hit the front for the first time as Becker was able to barge his way over between the posts.

Maunder’s late drop-goal made it a two-score lead and Rovers held on for yet another comeback win in West Yorkshire.

Fieldhouse’s men face another mammoth test on Saturday as they welcome third-placed Drighlington, one of only two teams to beat them this season, to Monk Sports Club.
