Woolston Rovers 36 Oldham St Annes 14

ROVERS got their first win of the season in some style as they comfortably saw off Oldham St Annes on Saturday.

The hosts ran in seven tries thanks to seven different scorers in what was a thoroughly entertaining contest against a side that had won their first two games.

Head coach Jon Fieldhouse was delighted by his side’s performance but says there is still work to do.

“I was very pleased with the victory over a very good Oldham team,” he said.

“We had worked really hard in training over the previous two weeks to improve our defence and also our completion rate when we had the ball and we had great success in both of those departments.”

It didn’t take long for Rovers to strike first, Craig Middlemore powering over on the left after 15 minutes after slick hands had put him through.

Stand-off Theo Holt was the next to score when his attempted pass was knocked forward but straight back into his hands for him to plant the ball over the line.

Oldham opened their account on the half-hour mark when Greg Worrall crossed on the left, but tries from Will Maudsley and Ryan Brown gave Rovers the perfect response.

St Annes fought back either side of half time and tries from Niall Collins and Matt Whitehead cut the deficit to eight points, but Will Chadwick’s try gave Rovers more breathing space.

Josh Sudlow and Dan Fearnley both crossed late on to seal the victory for Rovers, who travel to Gateshead this weekend.
