BUDDING rugby league stars are being 'hindered' by dog mess blighting the pitches at Victoria Park.

Latchford Giants under 14s coach John Wilkinson is calling for tougher action and urged the council to do more to tackle the issue.

The club spends around £4,000 each season to use the pitches and floodlit area but coaching staff remain frustrated at the current situation.

A total of 220 youngsters take part in training sessions each week, however, Mr Wilkinson admits a lot of time is being spent on clearing up the mess.

He said: "Something needs to be done to prevent this from happening as it is an ongoing problem.

"Signs need to go up about dog mess and there needs to be action.

"This is hindering the time and effort coaches spend with the young players – they are having to clear the mess up time after time.

"We pay for the service so should receive one to the same standard of any team using the pitches.

"I understand the budget cuts and lack of man power to provide wardens but we pay for a service so should receive a service up to a standard fit for children, parents and visitors to the Victoria Park area which showcases Warrington as the place to be for sport."

Mr Wilkinson fears the development of skilled youngsters could be hit detrimentally if the matter is not stamped out.

The council is aware of problems and has vowed to tackle 'irresponsible' dog owners to ensure they're 'held accountable'.

A spokesman added: "We share these concerns and are frustrated by the irresponsible behaviour of some dog owners

"We checks the pitches before cutting and marking but ultimately the pitch hirers make a final check as part of their duty of care towards the players.

"Where we're able to trace the person responsible we'll be able to investigate further and take appropriate action.

"We appreciate that it is often difficult to witness the actual fouling taking place. However, we need to get as much information as we can about those responsible."

Offenders face a fixed penalty fine of £50 or a maximum penalty on conviction of £1,000.
