Dewsbury Celtic u16s 16 Woolston Rovers u16s 18

WOOLSTON Rovers under 16s progressed to the National Cup quarter finals with a win at their Dewsbury Celtic counterparts on Sunday.

However the Yorkshire outfit took Rovers to wire and a missed conversion late on saw the Warrington side hold on to book a last-eight spot.

On a very heavy pitch and with a biting wind blowing across it Rovers fell behind early on with a converted try out wide on the left.

But the visitors soon responded with a fine try out wide by Ryan Robinson that was converted by Jake Bray to level the scores.

Rovers then took the lead when a neat kick through by Jake Eccles saw Ryan Finnerty react quickest to pounce on the ball and score at the side of the posts. Bray added the conversion to give his side a 12-6 half time advantage.

The start of the second period saw Rovers move up another gear and they went further ahead when Kieran Jones scored on the flank. Bray once again added a fine conversion.

When it seemed that Rovers were in total control the home side’s never-say-die attitude brought them back into the game with a converted try to reduce the deficit to six points.

With just two minutes remaining on the clock Celtic kicked downfield and as Rovers collected the ball, a one-on-one rip by Dewsbury saw the hosts regain possession and score a third try.

However the conversion attempt failed and it was Rovers who were left to celebrate a magnificent win.

Man of the match and top tackler was awarded to Rovers' star man Todd Preston.

WOOLSTON’S National Conference League friendly at Leigh East did not take place at the weekend.

Their final pre-season fixture is on Saturday, March 5 when Rovers entertain fellow NCL Division Three side Castleford Panthers, kick off is 2.30pm at Monks Sports Club.
