JOHN Fieldhouse insists his Woolston Rovers side must back up a 26-24 success against Stanningley with victory against Eastmoor Dragons on Saturday.

Rovers moved within two points of Saturday's Leeds-based opponents, in fourth, with a game in hand.

“We must ensure that we back up the win last week with another victory on Saturday," he said.

“Eastmoor haven’t had the best of results this year but you cannot afford to underestimate any side in this league and we will give them the utmost respect.

“We will work hard in training and make sure that we are fully tuned and ready to go and get the job done and come away with another two league points.”

Glyn Roberts opened the scoring after three minutes in the National Conference League Division Three game at Monks Sports Club.

The full back linked into the line superbly and rounded the cover to score in the left corner, but Stanningley replied seven minutes later when a kick by scrum half Callum Smithson was collected by winger Sean Connelly and he passed back inside to full back Martin McNiven who scored at the right of the posts.

Smithson converted to give his side the lead.

Just after the midway point of the half a break by Rovers’ winger James Rosson split the Stanningley defence and he found prop forward Jack Sherratt, who twisted in the tackle and scored on the right.

Winger Chris Twigg converted and then straight from the restart a chip over the Stanningley defence by Rosson saw him re-gather and race over on the right. Twigg added the conversion.

Rovers moved further ahead 12 minutes before the break when a fine pass out wide by scrum half Billy Maunder found centre Paul Berry, who raced over in the left corner.

Twigg converted from the touchline to give his side a deserved 22-6 half time advantage.

Four minutes into the second half Stanningley got themselves back into the game when second row Ashley Kearsley broke through the Rovers’ line to score at the left of the posts.

Smithson goaled and then on the hour centre Mark Calderwood, the ex-Great Britain winger, spotted a gap and shot through it from 40 metres.

Smithson added the conversion to reduce the deficit to just four points.

Rovers settled their nerves five minutes later when a great break by Sherratt split the Stanningley defence and he found Twigg who squeezed over in the left corner to put the home side two scores ahead.

Even though five minutes from time Stanningley substitute Jack Sykes went over under the posts for a try that Smithson converte,d it was too little too late as Rovers calmly saw the game out to record a great 26-24 success.

Man of the match was awarded to Rovers’ winger James Rosson.

He was very well supported by Chris Mellor, Jack Sherratt, Ryan Brown and Paul Berry.

“That really was a gutsy victory and one that we were absolutely desperate to gain," added Fieldhouse.

“We knew that if we had lost the game then our chances of finishing in the top four were over but now we have a great chance of overhauling Stanningley.

“The victory did come at a considerable cost though as we lost Glyn Roberts and Paul Berry to season ending injuries whilst Jake Upton played his last game before he heads off to Australia for a year.”
