Rochdale Mayfield A 60 Woolston Rovers A 18

WOOLSTON Rovers A fell to a strong Rochdale Mayfield A side in NWML Division Two on Saturday.

The opening quarter saw Mayfield run in five unanswered tries through full back Komai Naululmatua, centre Sean Snape, two and prop forwards Mark Biggins and Gareth Ellison that were all converted by scrum half John Marsland to lead 30-0.

Rovers improved in the latter stages of the half and were rewarded on the stroke of half time when prop forward Dave Appleby made a run before finding scrum half Dominic Ball.

His high kick was caught out wide by centre Tom Woodward and he rounded the cover to score under the posts. Ball converted to make the interval score 30-6 to Mayfield.

After the break two more tries from Mayfield through Marsland and stand-off Aidy Gleeson, both goaled by Marsland moved them further ahead, but then Ball intercepted a Mayfield pass on the halfway line and raced 50 metres to score a try in the left corner that he converted himself.

Further Mayfield tries followed, but Mayfield’s Snape went over for his hat trick before second row George Yewdale crossed and then Snape added a fourth try.

Marsland made it ten out of ten with three more conversions butRovers had the final say when a great pass out from Ball found centre Danny Brown and he kicked over the Mayfield defence and re-gathered to score on the left.

Ball converted to make the final score 60-18 to the home side.

Best for Rovers were prop forward Jack Sherratt, second row Dan Fearnley and hooker Justin Becher.
