Stanningley 18 Crosfields 18

CROSFIELDS ended Stanningley's 100 per cent record on Saturday.

A penalty at a 29th-minute scrum gave Crosfields possession and good ground was made by Troy Brophy and Tom Caswell, which stretched the opposition defence.

A fresh Matt Mahoney, having started on the bench, took Jack Reid’s short ball and crashed over. Reid converted for a 6-0 lead.

The hosts hit back, twice, in the final two minutes of the half to take a lead into the break. That was extended to 12 points soon after.

But Steve Pickersgill led from the front and his determined run earned Crosfields a penalty.

A solid set brought the visitors close to the line and a grubber from Reid was pounced on by Kieron Thomas in the corner. Reid’s conversion attempt hit the post.

Midway through the half, Pickersgill and Brophy were at the forefront, causing the Yorkshire defence problems. 10 metres from the line Hayden James, with a pass to Luke Jones, took three defenders out of the game for Jones to go over unopposed and make it 18-14.

With less than 10 minutes to go John Whittaker and Jones made inroads into the opposition half. The pack took the ball forward, before quick hands moved the ball for Chris Burgess to level matters at 18-all.

A nail-biting last few minutes saw both sides go close, but the defences remained strong.

Pickersgill took the man of the match award, but all 17 made worthy contributions and things are looking up for the Crosfields side.

Crosfields are away on Saturday to Wibsey Warriors.
