Bank Quay Bulls 4 Woolston Rovers A 48

WOOLSTON Rovers A belatedly opened their 2015 North West Men's League Division Two Division Two campaign with a victory over Bank Quay Bulls at Longshaw Street on Saturday.

The Bank Quay side had a few experienced players in their ranks but the rest were from their under 18s side and despite them competing admirably for the 80 minutes it was Rovers who ran out comfortable winners.

Woolston opened the scoring in the second minute when a penalty put them close to the Bank Quay line.

After prop forward Mark Robinson was held just short hooker Danny Forster put man-of-the-match prop forward Matt Clarke over at the left of the posts.

Stand off Peter Leonard kicked his first of eight conversions from eight attempts and then three minutes later a fine break down the middle by Robinson split the Bulls defence and he found full back Shane Duffy in support to score between the posts.

On 15 minutes Rovers had a scrum on the Bank Quay 20-metre line and second row Dave Kelly took the ball from the base of the scrum and managed to slip a lovely pass out to winger Jack Holt who scored in the right corner.

Five minutes before the break quick hands by Rovers saw Kelly send Holt away down the right wing and after a quick play-the-ball loose forward Harry Files went over at the right of the posts for a half time score of 24-0.

Six minutes into the second half Rovers stretched their lead when great hands sent substitute Sam Wood away down the left and he found winger Martin Ball, who raced 40 metres to score another converted try.

Then Bank Quay were rewarded for their efforts when good hands stretched the Rovers defence and it allowed full back Reece Barry to race down the left and he rounded the cover on a 40-metre run to score on the left.

An error straight from the restart by Bank Quay saw Wood pick up the loose ball and race away. A quick play-the-ball left the Bulls defence all at sea and Mark Robinson powered over between the posts.

Thirteen minutes later great work on the last tackle by Leonard saw him beat three men on a diagonal crossfield run before he combined with centre Matt Robinson to put Holt over in the right corner.

Three minutes from time good work by Clarke saw him offload superbly to Wood who raced 40 metres to score.
