Highs and lows as Wort hangs on to decathlon silver

ALEX Wort recovered from pole vault disaster to claim a silver medal in the English Schools Combined Events Championships at Bedford.
The Warrington Athletics Club starlet was second in the senior boys’ decathlon when he failed to clear his opening height with the pole.
Despite that, 45.63m (524pts) with the javelin and 4mins 42.6secs in the 1,500m took him to 5,840pts for the silver.
His high jump and discus efforts were personal bests.
He started off day one with 11.69secs in the 100m (713pts), 6.35m in the long jump (664pts), 10.87m in the shot (538pts), 1.75m in the high jump (585pts) and 51.39secs in the400m (752pts) to give him 3,287pts and third place overnight.
Wort opened day two with 15.1secs for the 110m hurdles (837pts) and 34.95m in the discus (563pts).
