WOOLSTON’S Martin Brown had a successful Diamond Jubilee weekend when finishing fifth of 90 entrants in the prestigious nine-round Diamond Jubilee Chess Congress at Gatwick.

Brown, representing St Helens Chess Club, started the tournament with a tough game against top-seeded Grand Master Andrey Sumets from the Ukraine, losing in 78 moves.

But he put this early defeat behind him to win four consecutive matches over the next two days, including an excellent victory against the Irish International Master, Alex Astaneh Lopez.

The former Sir Thomas Boteler pupil, who is currently studying maths at York University, scored an excellent two out of four against two Grand Masters and two World Chess Federation masters, earning him an International Master Norm, which is a part-qualification towards the International Master title.
