RIXTON’S David McArthur was one of the few drivers at the Avon Tyres Formula Ford 1600 Northern Championship at Oulton Park that wanted the wet morning to continue.

A specialist at driving in damp conditions, the rain and a return to his home track meant that he had high hopes of improving his sixth-place position in the championship overall, hoping for a top ride in his post-1989 Van Diemen Formula Ford LA10 single seater.

It started well, with McArthur qualifying in first place for the main race only for the drying track conditions and poor start to prevent him from keeping his lead over more powerful opposititon.

He finally finished in third.
