UPON learning that Lee Briers had broken his Warrington Wolves point-scoring record, Steve Hesford quipped: “I’ll have to get my boots on!”

The 57-year-old considered that record, as well as the goal-kicking ones he still holds, as his major achievements in the game.

“Let’s hope Brett Hodgson (regular Wolves kicker) gets back into the team quickly otherwise my goal-kicking record will be gone as well,” he said.

“I don’t think I ever played in a match where we scored more than 50 points and Lee near enough scored 50 in one game.

“I’m obviously very pleased for Lee – he’s a magnificent player and I watch the games on TV.

“I understand how he feels about the record, he must be very elated. But, the sort of player he is, he won’t talk about himself too much. Instead, he’ll talk about the players who gave him the opportunity to do it.

“And it is down to your team. You get the opportunities because you play with a decent side.”

Zambian-born Hesford now lives in Blackpool and has been working in advertising sales for the past three years, after ending 14 years running pubs.

He said he keeps fit at the gym and plays golf.

Hesford won two John Player Trophy and Lancashire Cup medals with Warrington between 1978 and 1982.

As well as his 1,112 goals in a career achievement, he also holds Wolves records for most goals in a season (170) and most consecutive appearances (94).
