A GREAT Sankey High School rugby league team have been crowned regional champions for the second successive year.

After their year 10 success in 2008, the year 11 side won the Carnegie Champion Schools North West Final in style with a 46-4 defeat of Halton rivals Wade Deacon.

Further reward sees them progress to the national quarter finals of the Champions Tournament.

Warrington Wolves scholarship twins Rhys and Ben Evans were among the scorers, with the first two of Rhys’ hat-trick of tries handing Great Sankey a 26-0 half-time lead.

An early try from the impressive Feme Adepum gave first blood to Great Sankey.

Rob Campbell crashed over soon after, then classy stand off Matthew Whitehead Wilson extended Great Sankey’s lead as he collected a grubber kick that rebounded off the posts.

Fleet-footed Rhys Evans scored twice before the break and once after before further scores from Marcus Baines, who kicked five goals, Adepum and finally Ben Evans.

Meanwhile, Great Sankey were defeated 30-14 by Wigan’s Abraham Guest Sports College in the Carnegie Champion Schools North West Boys Year Eight Final.

Lewis Jones, Ben Jerram and Will Weir scored their tries.

Both schools will now represent the region in the National Stage of the Carnegie Champion Schools Tournament.

William Beamont Sports College lost 44-14 to Saddleworth High School in the Carnegie Champion Schools North West Boys Year Nine Final.

Saddleworth, winners for three years running, clocked up a commanding 28-6 lead but William Beamont hit back in the second half, Lewis Charnock scoring an impressive hat-trick.

Both teams will now enter the national stage as the North West top two seeds.
