Warriors continue to impress in National League


WARRIORS of Warrington are through to December’s regional ‘A’ final after impressing in the second round of the National Swimming League Premier Division at the weekend.

Warrington’s aces will contest the final with the aim of being one of the top 20 fastest teams in the country so that they can represent the north west at the National Swimming League cup finals in April, 2009.

Warriors secured their progress after finishing in a strong second place to home team City of Liverpool Swimming Club, at Everton Park Pool, in the second round.

Warriors recorded first place in 15 events, second spot in 16 races and third position in nine events in the action-packed 50-race gala.

There were individual wins for Tim Almond in the open 200m individual medley and the 100m breaststroke events, Toni Porrino in the 10 to 11-year-old girls’ 50m backstroke and Rebecca Pye in the 15-years and under 100m backstroke.

Andy Bushall won the 100m open butterfly and 100m freestyle, as did Jordan Barlow in the 15-years and under butterfly.

Scott Hathaway put in an outstanding performance in the open 100m backstroke, winning by more than half the pool.

Brendan Spencer was victorious in the 100m freestyle, as was Andrew Mclay in the 50m breaststroke.

The other individual winner was Sophie Long in the 15-years and under 100m breaststroke.

Warrington had further success in exciting team relays.

The nine to 11-year-old boys’ relay teams for both the freestyle and individual medley won both events. Team members were David Richardson, Andrew Mclay, Oliver Houghton, James Ross and Adam Ravenscroft.

The open medley team of Scott Hathaway, Tim Almond, Edward Shattock and Andy Bushall also won a closely fought race.

Final points: City of Liverpool 347, Warriors 335, Preston 275, Pioneer 79 220, Blackburn 206, City of Chester 181, Newton Hall 168.
