A CREW from Warrington will be tackling one of the world’s largest rowing events on Sunday.

Warrington Rowing Club’s Mike Pownall, Chris Johnstone, Tom Pearson and James Whitehead, along with coach Richard Sinnott, jet out to America today, Thursday, to take part in the Head of the Charles Regatta in Boston.

Sinnott said: “This is the first time that Warrington Rowing Club will have competed in a major event outside Great Britain and it will be a huge challenge.

“The event is thought to be one of the world’s largest rowing events and about 7,500 athletes will race over the 5km course on the River Charles through the centre of Boston.

“Crowds of 300,000 are expected to cheer on the rowers during the weekend’s programme of racing, with events for Olympic standard crews and club athletes from all over North America and the rest of the world.

“The Warrington crew have been training hard since racing at Henley Royal Regatta in July and it was that experience that made them look for a fresh challenge before they finish their studies at Lymm High School.”
