12:50pm Thursday 28th August 2008

WARRINGTON Athletics Club’s Josh Cook swept to glory in his pentathlon debut at the North West Open Combined Events Open at Sportcity in Manchester.

Cook led from start to finish in the under 15s event to take the title, with teammate Alex Wort taking third place. Cook gained a grade two AAA standard and Wort gained a grade three thanks to their performances.

In the senior decathlon, Warrington’s Chris Wells finished as third Cheshire athlete and third in the veterans category, which also made him the second Cheshire veteran.

Warrington’s Karrie Hawitt was the first woman to cross the line in URENCO five-kilometre road race.

Hawitt was 16th overall, while third-placed woman Jenny Smith was 24th overall.

Under 13s girls competitor Kelly Chadwick achieved a treble in Warrington Athletics Club’s annual Terry Davies Memorial Meeting at Victoria Park, winning the 75m, 150m and long jump events.

At under 17s level, Abi Fitzpatrick won the 100m and Sarah Griffiths clinched the 800m, while Megan Tyler won the senior high jump.

In the men’s events, Jack Payne won the 150m in the under 11s age group, Liam Burthem 1,500m at under 13s level, Jack Gleave was home first in the under 15s 400m race, while Danny Cliffe claimed the senior 800m title.

In the field events, Adam Nicholls won the under 17s long jump, while Mike Roach leapt to victory in the under 17s high jump and Danny Cliffe secured success in the senior triple jump.

Atrocious weather conditions greeted Warrington’ athletes who competed in the latest Trafford Athletics Club open meeting at Longford Stadium.

That did not prevent Luke Johnston and Luke Kinch recording personal best times in the 3000m.
