OLYMPIC rowing legend Sir Steve Redgrave has hailed the silver medal achieved by Richard Egington and the Great Britain men’s eight crew as ‘a fantastic result’.
Egington was in the British boat that took the bronze medal at last year’s World Championships but they moved up into second place behind favourites Canada in the Beijing final on Sunday.
Speaking to the BBC, Redgrave said: “The Canadians did what they said they could do. We knew they were going to go out fast.
“But a silver medal is still a fantastic result. With the bronze they got last year, they’ve moved up to a silver this time.
“The British were really strong. Maybe in the second 500 metres they just let the Canadians get away from them a little bit more, but they were certainly closing them down in the closing stages.”
