WARRINGTON Sports Personality of the Year Phil Archer went round in 78 on the third round of the Open Championship on Saturday.

Archer made the cut by one shot on nine over par on Friday, so went out on his own as the first player on the course at Birkdale on Saturday.

He suffered awful windy conditions and bogeyed the third, seventh and ninth holes to go out in 37.

Further bogeys followed at 11, 13 and 15 before a double bogey on 16.

The Birchwood Golf Club professional ended the round on 17 over par in tied 76th position.

He starts his fourth and final round at 7.50am on Sunday, when he will play alongside Germany's Martin Kaymer.
