LYMM Lawn Tennis Club’s Michael Ward is heading for the big time.

Next January, the 18-year-old will be rubbing shoulders with the likes of Maria Sharapova and Novak Djokovic at the famous Nick Bollettieri Tennis Acadamy in Florida.

Ward has been chosen for a week’s intensive training at the Acadamy as the recipient of John Eaton’s president’s fund at the club this year.

“I see this award as a fitting reward for all the hard work and dedication he has shown,” said Eaton.

“Michael has exceptional talent and a tremendous work ethic and I am sure that he will be a good ambassador, not only for the club but also for our country at the Bollettieri Acadamy.”

Ward currently plays on the Junior International Tennis Federation circuit and brought his junior world ranking down from 2,500 to 703 by the end of last year.

He is now starting to play in senior British Tour events and at present is ranked 112 in the country.

Ward has combined his tennis with school work and recently took his A level exams at Lymm High School.

He now intends to take a year off to train for tennis full time.
