FIDDLERS Ferry Sailing Club’s youth team found the going tough in their first attempt at the National Junior 12-hour Team Race at Southport.
Ferry’s team of 11 youngsters were soon in trouble with the boat’s rudder breaking on the first lap in the face of strong winds.
Valuable time was lost in affecting repairs but a new rudder blade was obtained and, after losing 40 minutes, the boat was back in the water and racing.
After the first three hours Fiddlers Ferry were placed last with average lap times taking 28 minutes.
As the event came to its close Ferry had reduced their laps to 18 minutes with some fast times of 13 minutes being recorded by Alan Dodd and Reece Tomlinson as well as Alex Rigby and Kim Devereux.
Fiddlers Ferry were 27th out of the 28 who finished the event.
