We were always in with a chance

WHEN Kevin Penny touched down his first try of the season to put Wolves within four points of Saints with three minutes to go on Friday he was confident of winning the game.

He said: "There was never a stage where I thought the game was gone.

"We were always in with a chance but you can't give penalties away like we did in that game."

Penny, favourite at the start of the season to finish top of Super League's try-scoring charts by the end of the campaign, has not failed to score in any game he has started for Wolves at Knowsley Road.

"I wouldn't mind going to Saints and not scoring but winning though," he said.

It has been 14 years since Wolves have won at Knowlsey Road and he added: "It's something that we've got to turn around and turn around fast."

Unless Saints draw Wolves at home in the Challenge Cup, the next opportunity to break the hoodoo will be on August 8 when the sides meet at Knowsley Road for a second time.

But attention has now turned to the team's first trek over the Pennines this season.

Wolves face a Hull KR side that pushed champions Leeds Rhinos to the wire in their first game of the season before defeating St Helens at home and Catalans Dragons away.

The Robins' start to the season clearly indicates Wolves will not have the kind of 60-20 romp they enjoyed at Craven Park last July.

"Absolutely not," said Penny.

"There is not one easy game in Super League.

"Every club has recruited well, anyone can beat anyone.

"But that means the game will be there for the taking on Sunday.

"We're going to take the positives out of Friday's defeat at Saints and take them into the clash with Hull KR and hopefully build on that."

* There will be more from our interview with Kevin Penny in Thursday's Warrington Guardian.

Some good points but the comment about teams playing badly is way off the mark.
Do you seriously think that teams will play badly because there is no relegation?
Any person, club, organisation or whatever be it in sport or business plays the game to WIN, otherwise why bother.
The reason for no relegation this year is that super league franchises are up for grabs next season and if any club does not meet or exceed the franchise criteria they will be out on their ear regardless of where they finish in the table. Clubs who do not reach the minimum criteria off the pitch, note off the pitch, have everything to lose. This means they have to operate as a viable business entity with correct business development plans in place, suitable and safe stadia, local development systems in operation and community programmes established.
This has taken a long time to come but in my opinion this takes RL to the next level. Still behind our friends in Oz but this is a positive step in the right direction.
If you want RL in the days gone by then remember muddy pitches with momentum tries scored from 10 yards out, cold pies with lumpy gravy, pouring rain with no shelter, prop forwards with beer guts bigger than the Michelin Man, steam rising from the scrum not forgetting leather rugby balls weighing 20 ponds after 10 minutes play.
I know what I prefer!

The relegation issue as Dave rightly says has been removed for the licence to operate system. However under the new system to qualify for a licence you are assesed on ten key areas and a points scoring process is applied.
One of the points available is for finishing in the top eight over the last three years, another is playing squad strength.
There is no better way of demonstating playing strength than finishing as high up as possible and the oposite is true in reverse.
Having looked at the system it looks like Warrington will score very well and will be in the top two or three applications, so it's no worries for the wire getting in.

Just a point for those who like relegation. Under the new system from 2009 all clubs with a licence will have a three year period without relegation. That period will enable clubs to bring young players through without fear of going down. Currently the lower sides sign experienced players at the end of their careers just to stay up and the youngsters don't get a look in, this stiffles the talent coming through. Also year by year teams will be required to have more and more home produced talent in their squads. It works in Australia, just look at the depth of talent they have. Bring it on I say.

Fair point Pete, it goes without saying that we wish him well. A mate of mine had the same injury about 10 years ago and it's a nasty one.
On the plus side he made a full recovery and he was in his late 30s at the time.
I think with Bridgeys age, fitness and improved surgery he will make a full recovery as quickly as possible. Good luck mate.
