PAUL Carden waxed lyrical about Warrington Town’s “electric” first-half display during tonight’s 2-0 win over Workington.

Yellows were dominant before the break and were rewarded by goals from Tony Gray and Jack Mackreth, whose strike capped a highly-impressive home debut.

That was enough to secure back-to-back wins and a fourth clean sheet in a row for Town to move them up to third in the Evo-Stik Premier Division.

Carden says the scoreline “flattered” Workington and that his side could have won more comfortably.

“I thought the first half was outstanding and we probably should have been more than two up,” he told the Guardian.

“Our attacking play was really good, but I called it a couple of weeks ago when people were saying we weren’t scoring goals.

“There’s too many good attacking players in there for us not to score.

“I think 2-0 has probably flattered them if I’m being honest.

“Tony McMillan makes a big save in the second half, which is what he does and we’re grateful for that.

“At the other end, we were electric at times, especially in the first half.”

Mackreth dazzled on his first appearance at Cantilever Park, with Workington skipper Gary Rowntree struggling to cope with the winger’s pace as he was substituted at half-time.

However, Carden says the former Bury and Wrexham man was disappointed with aspects of his own display.

“He’s played two games now for us and we know what type of player he is,” he said.

“Jack was disappointed because his crossing was a bit short at times and his cut-backs didn’t quite hit the mark.

“Their left-back is one of their better players, I think he had a bit of an injury that contributed to him going off at half-time but Jack’s ripped him apart.

“Josh Amis was dominant, Tony Gray was clever, the two central midfielders were outstanding as well and covered every blade of grass.

“We had no bad performers.”
