Lancaster City 1 Warrington Town 3

WARRINGTON Town came from behind to ease to a 3-1 win at Lancaster City.

After an indifferent start, Yellows took control of the game after an own goal had cancelled out Simon Wills’ opener.

Two lovely team goals finished by Josh Amis and James Caton – both their first for the club – secured three points to bounce back from the disappointment of Saturday’s home opener.

Caton’s performance from the bench at the weekend earned him a start, while Luke George came in at centre-half for his debut with Adam Hughes moving to left-back.

The hosts took the lead inside 11 minutes when a teasing cross from the right by Sam Bailey was side-footed home by Wills, who arrived late at the back post, and they had the better of the first quarter of the match.

Paul Carden’s side were struggling to get a foothold in the game but still managed to get themselves level before the half hour when a deep free kick dropped for Ben Garrity at the back post.

He did well to steer it across goal and saw the ball diverted in off a defender.

That gave the visitors confidence and Josh Amis had a well-hit shot saved a minute later.

Robbie Evans was starting to dictate the game and he was pivotal in creating the goal that put Warrington in front.

He lofted a ball over for Hughes down the left, who returned to Evans inside the box.

He beat his man and took it to the byline, taking his time to play the ball across for Amis to tap in.

A rasping volley by Mitch Duggan whistled over the bar shortly before the break as Yellows took a 2-1 lead in to the interval.

The game opened up for an entertaining start to the second half, with Evans curling a shot just wide and defender Craig Stanley heading wide for Lancaster.

The game-breaker came on 57 minutes and once again it was a well-worked team goal.

The ball was worked in from the right and a deft flick by Tony Gray found Caton in space and he slid the ball past the keeper and in to the corner.

That gave Warrington a cushion, though they were grateful to two fine saves by Tony McMillan from Bailey and substitute Rob Wilson.

They closed the game out with relative ease to get three points on the board ahead of Saturday’s visit of Stalybridge Celtic and the Bank Holiday Monday trip to Bamber Bridge.

Warrington Town: McMillan, Duggan, Hughes, Garrity, Roberts, George, Dunn (Hynes), Evans, Gray, Amis (Brodie), Caton. Subs not used: Adam Carden, Vassallo, Speare.
