Westhoughton Lions 20 Woolston Rovers A 26

A FINE second-half fightback saw Woolston Rovers A stun league leaders Westhoughton on Saturday.

A try, four conversions and a penalty from Liam Sullivan helped Woolston claw back an eight-point half-time deficit to record victory.

Daniel Markham, Jay Ryder and Josh Sudlow were also on the scoresheet as the visitors jumped to third in North West Men’s League Division Three.

After Sam Pennington crossed to give Westhoughton the lead inside the first minute, Rovers responded when Markham burrowed over from dummy-half.

Markham turned provider as Woolston went ahead shortly afterwards as he went down the blind side and found Sullivan, who dummied through to score.

However, tries from Pennington and Ryan Berry plus a Nicky Bullough penalty put the Lions in command at the interval.

Five minutes into the second half, Rovers winger Josh Bray somehow batted Callum Moore’s kick backwards and Ryder picked up the loose ball to score, with Sullivan’s conversion narrowing the deficit to just two points.

That deficit turned into an advantage on the hour mark when Sudlow crossed from close range, before Sullivan’s penalty completed the scoring late on.

The team are not in action on Saturday but welcome neighbours Crosfields A to Monks Sports Club in the Warrington Alliance Cup quarter-finals on Tuesday, kick off 7.30pm.
