It is a rare opportunity, too, to celebrate a Warrington man playing in the England football team during a World Cup - with Lingard being the first since Roger Hunt in 1966. We ask the question, is that an omen in itself?

Here we pay tribute to Lingard's rise in the professional game as TIM HAMMERSLEY picks out his five best Lingard performances. Do you agree with his choices?

Birmingham City 4-1 Sheffield Wednesday - September 21st, 2013

On his debut game of a 13-appearance loan spell at Birmingham City, Lingard won praise for an outstanding performance in which he scored 4 times, with the first three coming in thirteen minutes.

The 4 goals were a great nod to the versatile player Lingard has matured into, with a poacher’s goal from a spilled shot coming along side strikes from distance and a sweep into the top corner from the edge of the six-yard box

Chelsea 1-1 Manchester United - February 7th, 2016

In a clash where both teams for struggling for league form, Lingard showed both skill and composure beyond his years to break the deadlock and put United ahead.

Lingard, with terrific balance and agility, turned past Azpilicueta with one touch and fired into the top corner from 12 yards out.

Crystal Palace 1-2 Manchester United - May 21st, 2016

In what was at the time perhaps the biggest game Lingard had ever played in, he truly endeared himself to the United faithful with a late extra-time winner in the FA Cup final at Wembley.

A Palace clearance bounced out to Lingard who fired a volley into the roof of the net, giving Manchester United their first FA Cup win since 2004

Warrington Guardian:

Arsenal 1-3 Manchester United - December 2nd, 2017

Perhaps Lingard’s best performance in a United shirt saw him put two past Arsenal in a decisive 3-1 win.

His first coming after he robbed Arsenal centre-half Mustafi of the ball then combined with martial and Lukaku to side foot United into a two-goal lead.

The second, after he hit the post with a great chance not long before, came from Pogba fighting off several Arsenal defenders to square to Lingard for a simple tap in.

England 6-1 Panama - 24th June, 2018

Earlier in this World Cup campaign, Lingard truly stamped his mark on the tournament scoring an outstanding goal to put England out of sight against Panama and send them through to the knockout stages.

Lingard started the game with great energy, and his run into the area won England a Penalty.

After cutting in from the left flank and combining with Sterling, Lingard fired a fierce shot in the top right corner to put England three goals ahead.
