WARRINGTON Athletics Club members at both ends of the age spectrum celebrated important wins over the weekend.

Veteran Nick Jones managed to secure his second British Masters title in as many weeks, while several of the club’s younger members distinguished themselves while representing Cheshire at the Mason Trophy Inter-counties Schools meeting in Birmingham.

Despite just losing out in a sprint finish for overall victory at the British Masters 5km road race championships in Horwich on Sunday, Jones took gold in the over 40s age group.

This means he adds the British Masters 5km title to the 10km crown he won last week.

Steve Watmough, Colin Bishop and Dave Gill combined to win team gold in the 55-64 age group for Warrington at the same race, with Watmough winning an individual over 55s silver.

In Birmingham, under 15s stars Ashley Nemits and Meg Corker continued to star as they brought home two gold medals each.

Nemits and Corker won gold in the 200m and 75m hurdles races respectively before forming part of the Cheshire team that won the relay race.

Elsewhere, father and son Andy and Jack Green were in Barrowford for the Podium 5km race on Friday evening.

Jack took a staggering 15 seconds off his personal best as he finished 10th in 15mins 25secs, while dad Andy was close behind in 20th.

His time of 17mins 17secs was enough for him to be the first over 55s athlete to cross the line.

Elsewhere, Graham Green produced the fastest 3000m time by an over 50 athlete this year at the latest Trafford Grand Prix event.

The Warrington Athletics Club veteran clocked 9mins 9.90secs in the A race, which was good enough for 19th place overall.

Graham’s nephew Jack Green smashed his personal best time in the same race as he finished fifth in 8mins 54.56secs, while Pablo Artime was 16th and his time of 9mins 5.23secs was his fastest since arriving in England.

In the B race, Steve Watmough finished 12th in 9mins 53.48secs to move to fourth in the over 55 rankings.

Isaaq Ataullah improved his personal best time to 4mins 19.61secs in the under 17s 1500m, while Henry Buttress won his 800m race in 2mins 8.70secs.
